The ’70s called…and honestly, we might want them back

For years, home design seemed to be moving in one direction: white walls, grey floors, neutral everything.

But lately, personality is making a comeback.

Warm woods, earthy colours, bold patterns and vintage pieces are finding their way back into homes and some of the coolest spaces aren’t trying to hide their history at all.

That’s exactly what made one of my newest Medicine Hat listings so much fun.

Among its more modern spaces are a few fantastic reminders of another era including two vintage red phones, the classic cat clock with those unmistakable moving eyes, and an incredible retro bar downstairs that practically demanded we have a little fun with the listing. (If you’ve seen Devon in a 70’s wig, you gotta watch the video).

And that’s something I love about real estate.

Not every home needs to look exactly like the one beside it.

Sometimes an original feature, an unexpected room or a little vintage personality is exactly what makes someone walk through the door and think, “okay…this house is cool.”

The key is knowing which elements should be updated and which ones deserve to be celebrated.

Because good design doesn’t always mean starting over.

Sometimes it’s about taking the best pieces of the past and finding a way to make them feel at home today.
